2. A Red Dead Franchise Will Be Good For Gaming
Grand Theft Auto has long since established itself as one of the great video game franchises. As mentioned earlier in this list, it's so familiar to both gamers and the wider culture that it's on the brink of collapsing in on being a parody of itself - which we already saw signs of in the vacuous GTA V. The Red Dead series, on the other hand, can hardly call itself a series yet. It's made up of two games, and only really shot to fame with Redemption. Even though it sold brilliantly, Redemption didn't have the backing of a much-loved predecessor to build its reputation on, and lacks the recognition in mainstream culture that it deserves. Red Dead 3 could be the game to establish the series as one of the truly great gaming franchises - a much-loved piece of video game canon that will join the likes of Mario, Zelda, Fallout and GTA as a shining example of the medium. A new Red Dead game (provided it's as brilliant as many of us justifiably assume it will be) should also encourage publishers to take more risks when it comes to setting their games against the backdrops of history. Considering GTA's influence in establishing the urban open-world as a video game setting, we can hope that Red Dead 3 would have a similar impact on the historical genre - which in recent years has been pretty much monopolised by Ubisoft's annual Assassin's Creed release ritual.
