One thing that hasn't been communicated particularly well, perhaps, is the fact that doing challenges actually gives players some reward.
Complete all the challenges in a particular series, and you'll be given a valuable or some other kind of reward. Valuables can, of course, be traded for cash at your nearest fence, and though some challenges are certainly more difficult than others, it isn't as difficult to complete a set as it looks.
Yes, it's not exactly ideal, but if you bear the challenges in mind as you complete various missions, you'll find yourself netting a neat little bonus for your troubles.
