As previously mentioned, both games tell a very similar tale when boiled down to basics.
And therein lies the problem with the story of Red Dead Redemption 2. While Arthur Morgan is an amazing character his story is nothing new to the audience. Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, Grand Theft Auto V - all of these have already told the “one last job” storyline which RDR2 fails to go past.
Fans have already played a Rockstar game about the wild west coming to an end. Arthur’s story was a chance to see the gang during its glory days but the audience is treated to all too familiar story beats.
If RDR2 had come out before RDR then this entire argument would be flipped but the prequel suffers from repetitive themes because of it.
The original game told a refreshing story for its time by echoing its movie counterparts in the perfect gaming adaptation.
