9. The Wronged Woman
Staying in Blackwater and a visit to the local church where inside, Marston will find Clara LaGuerta, a pregnant woman sobbing at the alter.
Clara reveals that she was once the nanny to the Thornton family and was seduced by the patriarch, Harold. Thrown out by his wife and ostracised by the people of Blackwater, Clara pleads with Marston to see Harold and get any money that will help her find a home for her and her impending baby.
Meeting with Harold in a nearby saloon results in a fiery confrontation, with him claiming that he has no clue who Clara is and counter-accuses Marston of extortion. He then challenges our cowboy to a duel which he inevitably loses, with the $200 looted from his body going back to Clara.
When Clara hears of her former employer's passing, she takes the money and says she will attend his funeral.
However, at the funeral, Harold's widow Elizabeth reveals that "that dock trollop" Clara was giggling her way through the proceedings before disappearing. It then dawns on Marston that Clara has hoodwinked him with a sob story, tricking him into killing an apparently innocent man and robbing his corpse.
There's even a theory that says she wasn't even pregnant in the first place. Nice.
