Red Dead Redemption: 10 Darkest Stranger Missions
8. California
In the region of Gaptooth Ridge, Marston will come across the lonely traveller Sam Odessa who is on a quest to complete his family's journey of travelling from the Black Sea Region of Eastern Europe, to the Pacific Ocean by way of California, across three generations.
The initial meeting of Sam shows him to be a little weary but otherwise harmless, after which, Marston sends him on his way, warning him of the gangs that frequent the area.
Sam though quickly becomes more dishevelled and confused with each encounter. At the second interaction, he rambles about horses and cacti before disregarding more of Marston's advice, and the third meeting shows him to be filthy, possibly injured and almost certainly mad.
Several weeks of walking lost in the desert has taken its toll, and when Marston tries to intervene, Sam pulls a gun on him and flees.
The final time we find Sam, he is very dead, his decaying body having become lunch for some nearby vultures. Marston loots Sam's body and finds a letter revealing that Sam left behind a family, including his infant son, in the pursuit of his family's "dream". It seems like he even began to regret leaving them behind, and that he became aware of the journey's futility.
