Introduced in Red Dead and perfected in GTA V, Rockstar have clearly decided that animals, animal A.I. and their subsequent routines make for great gameplay.

Where in Red Dead this amounted to getting mauled by a wayward cougar or blasting a flock of birds out the sky, Redemption 2's trailer showed a corpse being eaten by a pack of vultures, the resultant dog barking away at the scene and in another shot, a hare being caught by another creature.

Again, this taps back into the feeling of survival when out exploring, turning the once barren landscapes we rode over in RDR1 into challenging levels in of themselves.
