Resident Evil 2: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

9. Down: Melee Options Are Completely Ineffective

Before you play RE2, there's something you should know. It's a lesson that ultimately has to be learned the hard way, but you must be warned: knives are not a worthy counter-option to using your guns. Knives are only good for keeping a zombie from biting a chunk out of you following a button prompt, nothing more.

Sure, the game gives you the option to take out a knife and wave it around like a proper means of defense, but it's just for show. On more than one occasion, I've landed several stabs to zombies' heads and bodies, both while they were on the ground and charging me. They didn't care at all. Without even so much as a flinch, they'd just keep charging until my character was knocked down and died of embarrassment.

This is your only melee option in the entire game and it simply doesn't work. Unless you've completely immobilized an enemy and slash away until they stop moving, there's no use for it. The franchise has obviously never been known for its melee combat, but with the overly-slow sprinting and not a lot of alternative escape options, RE2 really needed to offer something more substantial here.
