Resident Evil 6: 10 Reasons It’s The Death of the Franchise

1. All Style No Substance

Style important to a video game, essential in fact. Especially in today€™s modern gaming market, where ballooning budgets and technological advances mean that, in terms of style, there€™s so much on offer. Any game that lacks it generally ends up costing half its price at the local second hand store about three weeks prior to its release. But style without substance will get a game there just as fast. My problem with the last Resident Evil game, and with 6 so far, is that there€™s a huge emphasis on style, but very little on substance. The actual story, perhaps in a traditionally Japanese way, is sort of incomprehensible and seems to be sort of tacked on to get us from set-piece to set piece, like some gory, interactive Family Guy episode. This is a far cry from games like Red Dead Redemption whose epic style is offset by beautifully drawn characters, immersive story and subtle gaming mechanics. I really don€™t think there€™s any way to win back the series from the jaws of this argument; I feel like the more Resi games we get, the more inane and convoluted the story seems to become. In short, Resident Evil 6, in my eyes, is skirting dangerously close to drowning in its own bullsh*t. Of course, Resident Evil will still sell; the movies, somehow, will continue to generate revenue. I€™m not saying RE 6 is the last we€™ve seen of the franchise; I€™m just posing ten reasons why it€™s pretty much dead to me and thousands more like me. Have a bone to pick? Agree completely? Hey, a comment costs you nothing. Resident Evil 6 is out now for Xbox 360, PS3 now.
