Resident Evil 6: Where It Will Succeed and Fail

Controls & HUD The controls of RE6, at first, seem over whelming, but after a while you don't find them confusing as much as broken. The entire control scheme is broken. The rolling is mapped to aim as well as clicking in the left stick, so why even have the L1+forward, or LT+Forward, control in there? Why not simply have the left stick press command? And once you're on the ground, letting go of the aim button makes you stand up automatically, but pressing sprint while holding aim does nothing. These issues do nothing but frustrate, and the camera movement when running doesn't make the character rotate, meaning you need to stop, rotate, the move. While this is an RE staple, Re6 doesn't seem to mind automatically jogging and moving while shooting. These few issues just make the game hard to play. Same for the HUD. The in game menu, which is not on start but back or select, doesn't seem to let you actually change the settings. And it just looks horrible, and is not functional. The HUD in game is different for each character, which is a nice touch, but Chris' in particular is confusing. The health is a rifle magazine, which drains as you take damage, and the stamina is a bar beside it? And the ammo readout for all characters is individual marks, like Modern Warfare 3, as opposed to RE5's numbers. The system is pointlessly archaic and and difficult to understand. There is a silver lining here, and that is the main campaign selection screen is awesome, if a little too much like Battlefield 3's cool blues. One last thing. Old games used a laser sight to aim, nothing more. RE6 uses a reticle and a laser. Simply why. You never know which one to follow and neither one seems to be dead on accurate. And you can't turn either off, meaning you're stuck with it. I could really go on for days about how much I hated this game. It looked horrible from the start, the middle and now towards the end, my opinion hasn't shifted. Although the Mercenaries mode looks cool, and it was nice to be fighting real zombies, the game has some serious flaws that aren't going to be addressed. While it is a huge improvement over the Dragon's Dogma demo, the game still lacks the polish of RE5, the suspense of RE4 and backwards, and the controls to match any other shooter. While RE6 isn't, for me, a must buy, or even a maybe, I will keep one eye open to see how the game performs with fans and reviewers. What do you think? Love the game, or loathe it? Let us know!
