8. More Puzzles
Part of the joy of the early Resident Evil games was encountering a puzzle. They offered an extra layer of variety to proceedings and forced the player to use their brain a little if they were going to progress through the game. Of course, nobody is claiming that any of the puzzles presented by those titles were all that taxing on the old noggin, however, they certainly played an important part in establishing the ambiance presented by the games. Granted, it often took a little bit of a leap of faith on the part of the player to excuse their presence in a police station or laboratory, but that was all part of the charm. Resident Evil 4 and 5 both offered a few puzzles despite their more action-oriented approach, however, it was clear that they were becoming less integral to the experience. With the sixth game they had practically disappeared outside of Ada's campaign, and the ones that were there felt tacked on, either in an attempt to take advantage of the co-op mechanics or to be part of the "something for everyone" approach that the sixth game took. With many fans demanding a return to the series' roots, a more puzzle-heavy experience is required and said puzzles need to be integral to the core gameplay.
