Resident Evil 7 - 10 Crippling Issues Capcom Need To Fix
5. A Little Subtlety
With the announcement of the cancellation of Silent Hills still so fresh in the memory, the time is ripe for a survival horror game that makes a little more use of subtlety. Resident Evil 7 could be that game and, in doing so, it would offer something a little bit different to the constant action of recent entries. Recent entries in the series have felt like Capcom were intent on smashing the player over the head with bio-weapons no matter which way they turned, so introducing a little mental manipulation could go a long way. Perhaps, instead of every boss encounter being against a hulking menace that simply needs to be pumped full of lead until it dies, the next game could instead feature a boss that plays on emotions a little. After all, the entire cast of the Resi series must be carrying an enormous amount of baggage at this point. Maybe a villain of some sort could take advantage of that? Now this isn't to say that the jump scares that have created so many classic moments in the series' history should be done away with. All it means is that Capcom should take advantage of the rather wonderful scenery and atmosphere that they are capable of creating and use it as more than a means to get to the next shooty section. They shouldn't be afraid to slow things done every so often and really tell a story. After all, if done well, an implied threat can be even more terrifying that the one that's right in front of your face.
