4. Bring Back The Charm
One of the many reasons that the early Resident Evil games were so popular was the enormous amount of charm that the games have. It truly felt like you were playing through a B-movie at times. Granted, it was a B-Movie that was capable of being pant-wettingly terrifying, but a B-movie nonetheless. Terrible writing and hammy voice acting combined to bring experiences that were unlike anything else on the PlayStation, and by the time Resident Evil 4 came around players could tell that the series took great delight in this reputation for not taking itself too seriously. Resi 5 continued the tradition, thanks in large part to the wonderful Albert Wesker being so incomprehensibly diabolical, but there was a slight shift towards a more serious tone. Resi 6 continued this path and, for many, simply felt like it had started taking itself way too seriously. Though the dialogue was often as cringeworthy as it has been in the past, and many of the situations presented were outright ridiculous, it no longer carried the charm of previous iterations to pull it off with a smile. Everything just felt too gritty and forced, leading to the game once again feeling less like Resi and more like a generic action title with some known characters thrown in.
