Resident Evil 7: 9 Past Mistakes Capcom Have Already Fixed
5. You're On Your Own
Whether it be job interviews, your car breaking down on an empty road in the middle of the night or being accosted by the undead, almost all things in life are scarier when you're forced to do them on your lonesome, and it's a fundamental box to tick if developers truly want their games to be scary.
As fun as Resident Evil 5 was to play with a mate by your side, its inclusion also sapped away any remaining traces of tension that may have been there if Chris had instead gone after Wesker lone wolf style. Heck, even knowing that Barry Burton/Rebecca Chambers were knocking about in the Spencer Mansion with you in the original game helped to alleviate the fear at least somewhat.
There's certainly nothing wrong with receiving a helping hand now and then from a friendly face, but it should always be used sparingly, and at the right time. From what I've seen so far, the Baker Mansion will only house one sane individual, and that's you.
