Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - The Baker Family Explained

Eveline (aka. E-001)

Capcom

Subject E-001, aka. Eveline, was a genetically grown child designed by The Connections to be the ultimate weapon. Capable of taking over the minds of anyone she came in contact with and creating entire armies of disgusting Molded creatures, she was designed to eliminate the need for actual fighting to win wars and conflicts, but also housed an unhealthy obsession with acquiring a 'family' of her own.

When the tanker carrying her and Mia Winters was hit by a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, Eveline was saved by the Baker Family and brought to their home in the Louisiana swamps. From that one night onwards, Eveline began to take a hold of the Bakers, infecting them all that night and forcing them to kidnap, torture and kill dozens of tourists, travellers and homeless people in an attempt to expand her family further. It's this need for a family that causes Eveline to take control of Mia and contact Ethan Winters, the playable character, hoping that the two might make for a good mother and father for her.

The infections aren't always immediate, however, and both Mia and the Bakers have moments following on from the tanker's wash up where they are their 'normal' selves with a bad suspicion towards 'the child', though they aren't exactly sure why.

At the end of the main storyline, it's revealed that after three years of being left alone in the Baker residence without her treatments, Eveline has gone from appearing as a ten-year-old girl to the barely living old woman in a wheelchair that players had seen a few times throughout the game. Growing at x25 the rate of a normal person, Eveline is still able to move herself around the estate to stalk the player and trigger violent hallucinations in an attempt to take control of their minds.

Much like the Baker family, she becomes so desperate to join, the manner of Eveline's demise ultimately shows her to be just as much a victim as the people she controls. When Ethan and the player craft the E-Necrotoxin needed to break her control and inject her with it, her first reaction is exactly that of a child: screaming out that it hurts her and questioning why no one wants to be in her family.

Chris Redfield and Blue Umbrella soon arrive on the Baker estate and help Ethan put an end to Eveline, however by that time players are sure to have more than a smidge of sympathy for a child who had spent all of her life alone just wanting to find a family by the only means she knows.
