Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - The Baker Family Explained
Jack Baker
Prior to the events of the game, Jack Baker was at the head of an upstanding and respected family in the community. A former marine, loving husband and committed father, Jack actually kickstarts the transformation of the Baker family into the infected group of baddies players find in the game when he listens to his instincts and rescues two girls, Mia Winters and the child Eveline, from a beached boat on the Louisiana marshlands near his home following a great storm.
It's cruel that his final act of humanity is the one who spelt the end for him and his family, but in many ways, it perfectly encapsulates his paternal instinct and the genuine good nature Eveline will end up taking away.
Once infected, Jack is arguably the most brutal and sadistic Baker the player will encounter, being gifted immense strength, regenerative abilities and a real lust for hacking and slashing at trespassers on his property with an assortment of huge brutish weapons.
Out of all those who become infected from Eveline over the course of the game, Jack Baker genuinely seemed to revel in his new abilities and embrace the 'gift' he had been given. His parenting methods become much stricter, sawing Lucas' arm off for throwing his food at the table, and he constantly makes a point of showing off how much damage he can take over the course of his three boss fights thanks to his new regenerative abilities and super strength.
However, infected or not, one thing that never changed with Jack over the course of the game was his bond with his wife Marguerite. The Bedroom DLC shows the Baker family's patriarch acting almost a stopper for Marguerite when she flies off the handle in her fits of rage, potentially giving eagle-eyed players a further peek behind the curtain at what life could have been like for the married couple before Eveline's arrival.
Jack Baker almost meets his end many times throughout the events of Resident Evil 7, but thanks to his gift, he withstands being run over, shot in the face, a chainsaw and even the antidote created by Zoe that turns him into the Molded monstrosity players face in the boathouse. Reemerging in the End of Zoe DLC as the Swamp Man, he is finally put down by his brother younger brother Joe and his super cool AMG-78 power gauntlet.
