Resident Evil 8: 10 Things It MUST Learn From RE2 Remake
2. Zombies Are Still Scary
While zombies have shown up since Resident Evil 3 here and there, Capcom have, for the most part, forgotten what made them so scary. The original monsters transformed into Lovecraftian creatures by the fourth title, home to gross mutations that doubled down on their sci-fi origin. The regular shamblers returned in 6, but there they were cannon fodder rather than creatures you should be scared of.
Resident Evil 2's zombies, however, have rediscovered their fear factor. Even though you can freely aim for the head, taking one of these bastards down can be a game of a chance, as sometimes they pop with one lucky critical hit, and other times it might be 10 bullets wasted before you find the sweet spot. Even one can be a danger if you lose your cool and allow it to get to close.
It's the idea that they never stop coming that makes them so formidable, though. Even if you've blown off their lower half, knocked them down with a headshot or knifed away their flesh, they can still continue to chase you. Resident Evil 8 doesn't necessarily have to use bog-standard zombies if it doesn't want to, but it should recognise the traits that made 2's monsters so terrifying.
