Resident Evil 8: 10 Things It MUST Learn From RE2 Remake
6. A Persistent Killer
Although Nemesis popularised the trope, the idea of the player being stalked by a persistent, unstoppable killer has shown up across as bunch of different Resident Evil games. The seventh game had Jack Baker, a shirtless monster who'd stalk you and try to introduce you to his axe, Jack Torrance style.
Sure, you could put him down... but he'd always get back up.
While it was great in theory, old Jack could sometimes be a bit more annoying than scary. Sometimes he would pop up out of nowhere and completely ruin your day, inspiring a bout of genuine terror. Other times his appearance would be met with an exasperated sigh, as you're once again forced to run and hide before getting on with your mission.
It's a balance so many horror games have struggled to secure, but with Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, Capcom might have just nailed it. By the time the beast turns up you've become accustomed enough to the area to know how to lose him, while never getting lost yourself. Only a couple times does he ever actually interfere with a puzzle, and his presence is as well paced as an invincible enemy has ever really been.
If Capcom want to continue this trend, then, they're better off using him as a basis. Or maybe they'll save that for Nemesis...
