The major thing Capcom are apparently bringing along from the Hookman build of Resident Evil 3.5 is the idea of blending hallucinations with reality. In that pre-release version, reality could shift on a whim, and Leon would be transported into an alternate world where supernatural creatures haunted him, with the player attempting to navigate this new space without compromising their place in the "real" world.

It's a great premise - one made impossible by the technical limitations of the time - that could add a unique dynamic that Resi so far hasn't embraced. The seventh title did go down a more supernatural-orientated route, but this gimmick would allow the devs to explore that even further without breaking canon, and giving up completely on the grounded explanation for why the weird things in this world exist.

The past few games have enjoyed a pervasive sense of unpredictability thanks to the addition of persistent enemies that can't be killed, but that's getting a bit old now. To maintain that uneasy atmosphere without treading familiar ground, having reality itself be the enemy could be the perfect solution.
