Once Umbrella had harnessed Stairway of the Sun, it wasn't so straight forward from there.

They found out that only a unique few would ever be compatible enough with their newly produced Progenitor and T-Virus samples - which were stolen from the cold, dead hands of Dr Marcus by Wesker and William Birkin, on orders of Spencer.

Under his supervision, they continued the work of Dr Marcus' at the Arkley Training Facility. One key part of their research would include Lisa Trevor, daughter of George Trevor, who most notably was the architect of the Spencer Mansion and the secret facility underneath.

Lisa became instrumental in the development of the T-Virus, and was also the first subject to receive the G-Virus.

Somehow, she survived for years trapped as Umbrella's guinea pig. Once freed, she dons her mother's face as a mask, having been left mentally disturbed after extensive testing. After over 11 years of being kept prisoner and tested on relentlessly, Umbrella had what they needed to push the Tyrant program forward, and with that, they just needed a suitable host for their very own T-Virus.

Sergei Vladimir happened to be the specimen that Umbrella needed for their Tyrant programme to really kick off into mass production.

Unlike so many before him, this former Colonel in the Soviet Army had DNA that was less susceptible to necrosis - something that was prolific in most of Umbrella's test subjects over the years.

Necrosis is what eventually lead to zombification, and thus, so many incidents within the Resident Evil timeline, with the Raccoon City Incident being one of the largest ever recorded.
