ps1 And in this corner, the up and coming (it was at the time) wave of the future. The best selling computer entertainment device between the years of 1998 and 2006. It's the PSX. Only surpassed in sales and popularity by its sequel, the Play Station 2, the PSX was one of the first consoles to explore the option of compact discs over gaming cartridges. Naturally this made it more versatile giving it the abiliy to also play music CDs. It also had to ability to produce lengthy games that could be spread over more than one disc such as the Final Fantasy series. This made the console very popular in Asia where it destroyed Nintendo 64 in sales. The Games:psx-1-s1kj0w Sony's decision to use CD-Rom compact discs over traditional cartridges resulted in a surge of third party publishers who wanted in on their console's action. It also meant that many computer games released for the PC at that time were easily converted into Play Station games as well. The results of all these couples gave the Play Station a vast amount of titles in its arsenal, just over 2,400 games in all. Several popular game series got their start beginning with the Play Station One. Many of them are still being continued to this day.
