Satoru Iwata - 10 Iconic Nintendo Games You Should Play As Tribute

2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

When Nintendo were revolutionising the industry by bringing Mario into the 3D realm, Satoru Iwata was still working at Hal Laboratory and never had the opportunity to work on it. In fact, he held the opinion that the game actually divided up the fanbase and may have even alienated many of the fans of the originals who longed for the days of the 2D Mario games to return. While Nintendo ploughed on with their fully 3D Mario titles under his reign as President - releasing Sunshine and the two excellent Galaxy games in the process - you have to feel that Iwata's influence led to the company revisiting that original formula with the New Super Mario Bros. games. The result was a superb title that brought everything from the NES and SNES classics into a modern era, thus creating something that could rein in those fans who Iwata felt had been alienated by Mario's move into 3D. Of course, Iwata was also wise enough to ensure that there was enough 3D Mario to go around with the Galaxy games, so the Wii truly became the console of choice for practically every kind of platforming action you could dream of.
