Sekiro: 11 MAJOR Changes That Will Shock Dark Souls Fans

9. Dying As Many Times As You Like

It might be called "Shadows Die Twice" but if you play your cards well, you can die as many times as you want.

See, Sekiro's respawn mechanic is based on three things:

1. HUD pips denote you have two lives left to expend (but they get refilled at a shrine).

2. The time since your last death dictates whether the option to resurrect a second time is available. If you're too overzealous and perish too quickly, that second chance just isn't ready yet.

3. Killing enemies lets you restore the second pip, so you can get another life in the bank for a future fight. And it's this that can be done repeatedly, providing you wait long enough in between respawns.

Combined, it encourages you to indulge in the game's stealth components, offing grunts and refilling your second life node, but also means if you go down, you should take your time thinking of a new strategy, rather than attacking and getting wiped out again.

This decision to try as many times as you need to (outside of boss encounters) also feels like a counterbalance to the fact that XP or "Souls" are often lost forever when you die, but we'll get to that very soon.
