Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 7 New Gameplay Details You Need To Know
7. Bonfires And Estus Flasks Are Back... Kinda
Though Sekiro is making great strides to move away from the methodical nature of Dark Souls to give players a far more immediate and streamlined action experience, the latest release won't be doing away with staples from the developer's other franchises entirely. In the same way Bloodborne took the ideas of bonfires and estus flasks and repurposed them, Sekiro is once again adding its own twist on the classic mechanics.
Estus this time comes in the form of gourd, a drink which restores your health. You only have a set amount initially, but can actually increase the volume depending on how many of the "bonfires" you light in areas, which this time come in the form of busshi statues. The more you activate, the freer you become to explore without having to worry about your gourd.
This also plays into the new resurrection system, which fills up as you defeat enemies, allowing you to immediately jump back into the fight after being killed. Of course, if you use up your health refills and return from the dead you're essentially screwed, meaning you need to judge when to heal, and when to take the fall and come back even stronger.
