The confrontation with the Owl at the top of Ashina tower makes it clear that your adopted father has been a bad dude the entire time. Not only was he the one who stabbed you in the back three years ago at the Hirta Estate (perhaps to set into motion the Wolf's connection to the Divine Heir), but here he is again, attempting to use the Dragon's Blood for himself.

His plan, essentially, is to become an immortal dictator and take over Japan, and with you being his son, he gives you the option to join him in his pursuit of power. If you do, you'll have to fight through the Divine Heir's last line of defence, taking out Emma and Isshin in quick succession. With them dead, the Owl confidently talks about his plans for domination but, getting revenge for earlier, Sekiro stabs him in the back with the mortal blade, becoming the demon warrior Shura in the process.

A final stinger reveals the Wolf went on to complete the Owl's reign of terror, beginning a massacre throughout the land.
