Should More Classic Final Fantasy Games Be Remade? The Arguments For & Against
4. Against - Taking Goodwill For Granted
When Square-Enix first announced that VII Remake was not going to be a completely faithful retelling of the original story, there was considerable backlash. Much doubt will certainly have been destroyed by the quality of the finished product of episode one, but there are still elements of the fanbase that are sticking to their guns and decrying the game for not being a shot-for-shot remake.
It remains to be seen just how extreme any future changes to the narrative will be, as the ending showcased some shocking revelations. Goodwill could certainly go off the deep end if episodes two and beyond use these as a foundation to go in a radically different direction to before, which could put people off in their droves and lead to a stonewall rejection of any further reimagining of any other games.
Complete remakes (as opposed to remasters) are quite rare in the world of gaming, but in the world of film, it isn’t uncommon for them to go in a drastically different direction to their source material in order to be both unpredictable and stand out as something other than a rehash of the original. More often than not they don’t go down too well, evidenced by how the majority of film remakes are held in much lower regard than their predecessors.
Final Fantasy’s fanbase can be as fickle as they come. Square-Enix certainly won’t want to push them too far by completely upsetting the applecart.
