4. Silent Hill: Downpour

Last year when Silent Hill: Downpour released it finally seemed like the series had found redemption. I fully admit the game is a technical mess with framerate issues galore, but the story and level design encapsulated everything a modern day Silent Hill game should. Unfortunately, the game got unfairly panned by critics and received poor sales which led to the development studio being laid off. The themes and morals explored however were incredibly gutsy and taboo, a staple of the series that did admittedly go away after the disbanding of Team Silent. Downpour begins with you mercilessly stabbing the hell out of a fat guy in a prison shower, and leaves you glad you did by the end. Downpour also introduced side missions to do around the haunted city which were also eerily disturbing with premises that could make for their own intriguing nightmarish experience. Traditional series composer Akira Yamoaka was also replaced by Daniel Licht of TV show Dexter fame but I liked what he brought to the table too.
