Silent Hills: 10 Reasons To Be Incredibly Excited

3. We're Yet To See What The 'Fox Engine' Can Really Do

We've seen the new Metal Gear Solid running on the Fox Engine in-game (the in-studio name for the fancy technology bringing everything to life) and it looks suitably stunning, as well as in the P.T. teaser-reveal of in-game Norman Reedus he looks identical to his real-world counterpart. However the worlds of Metal Gear and Silent Hill are completely different beasts, the former edging more and more into ludicrous territory thanks to flying flaming whales and hologram-technology in the 70's whilst the latter has for the most part always maintained a strict set of rules around its universe and characters. However both those elements have been bandied about between a variety of developers, with original Konami-offshoot Team Silent bowing out after the lacklustre part four, Silent Hill: The Room. Since then we've seen everything from Wiimote-flailing chase scenes in Shattered Dimensions to a terrible HD re-release two years ago, and a slight return to form with Silent Hill: Downpour - although even that didn't please everybody thanks to reusing combat that was now over a decade old. With the P.T. demo showing off some very impressive lighting techniques and shadows, we know for a fact the toolset Kojima and del Toro are playing with is of optimum quality - it'll just be a case of taking influence from what worked and what didn't from the previous titles and injecting their own signature style.
