Skyrim Dawnguard DLC Revealed at E3 2012

New Creatures

A new type of dragon will be introduced with the expansion: legendary dragons. Presumably a subtle reference to the powerful legendary creatures from Fallout: New Vegas, this new type of dragon is the strongest yet, only being encountered by the player after they reach level 50. Also, the gameplay trailer shows a dragon diving into a lake of ice. Whether this move is exclusive to legendary dragons or is now available to even the weakest of dragons, this is a feature that I'm looking forward to. Besides the bugs that plagued Skyrim since day 1, dragon AI was the biggest disappointment for me. Any signs of new or improved AI get a thumbs up from me. During a visit to the Soul Cairn, the Dragonborn is given a spell to summon Arvak, a new skeletal horse mount. This will hopefully make travelling around much easier; horses in Skyrim are easy to kill, and even easier to lose. Even after obtaining Shadowmere, I struggled to get anywhere on horseback as he would simply wonder off the moment I dismounted. The introduction of mounted combat will make using a horse even easier, maybe even removing the need to dismount completely. Skyrim DLC can never be a true expansion without introducing new enemies, and Dawnguard more than covers this. The new enemies include armoured trolls, death hounds, gargoyles and the Soul Cairn's Bonemen. The trailer shows the Dragonborn defeating some sort of giant ogre. Although this creature has not been named, it will likely be one of the high-level enemies that the Dragonborn can encounter.

The Verdict

Despite such a short trailer and brief interviews with game developers, a lot of information has been revealed concerning the Dragonborn's latest adventure. And I for one am preparing to put my life on hold for what is surely to be a brilliant addition to one of the best games to ever grace the Earth.
