8. Doom Guy
Doom Guy does initially seem a bit jarring, and not exactly the sort of thing you’d expect to see in Smash. Can you imagine Isabelle stepping into battle with her fishing rod, or Princess Daisy with her turnips and umbrella, only to come up against Doom Guy’s Big F***in’ Gun?!
However, with the likes of Snake and the Belmonts already in there, Doom Guy doesn’t seem like such a strange choice. Fighting games have integrated guns before without making them fatal (Joker brings one, for example), so with some fine tuning, it could definitely work.
Doom Guy is undeniably an iconic figure in gaming too, arguably a lot more so than many already immortalised in Smash. Though he doesn’t have massive links to Nintendo especially, this isn’t a deal breaker.
Though Mario, Pokémon, Kirby and Zelda are all there, Doom Guy has about as much to do with Nintendo as Street Fighter. With such a huge cast across so many games, they simply can’t all be Nintendo darlings.
With Doom’s reboot on the Switch being followed by Doom: Eternal, the timing does fit for Doom Guy to make his way over to Smash.
