Sony Japan Studio: 28 Best Games They Helped Create

As PlayStation stepped into a new era (that of the PSP and PS3), Japan Studio got a major shake-up of principles. They moved away from solely marketing to the Japanese audiences with RPG blockbusters and niche party games, to make, well...whatever the hell they wanted.

Behind the scenes, the studio supposedly became the Wild West, full of creativity and risky pitches, but on the downside, it started to lose a cohesive focus as well. Regardless it was a mad period that produced several one-of-a-kind experiences.

You could find no better example of this than with LocoRoco: initially a PSP exclusive (later ported to PS4), it featured a warmly colorful cartoon planet, with cute aliens talking complete gibberish (and a catchy soundtrack sung in their dialect). Gamers would navigate a smiley blob creature across maps, to eat and replicate in a fun and likable campaign.

Nowadays, with the off-kilter indie scene, most wouldn't flinch at the concept...but back then though, it was a head-scratching gamble, especially with it centered to be the PSP's first major in-house developed content.

It managed to be a hit with the booming PSP market of Japan, although internationally only achieved cult status.
