Sony Japan Studio: 28 Best Games They Helped Create
5. Bloodborne
Developed by: From Software
After the initial dismissal of From's Demon Souls by Sony (they opted out of international distribution), the studio rose to a prestige dev. Sony, Japan Studio, and From Software all wanted to make nice afterward.
That result was Bloodborne, a PS4 exclusive, that turned the Soulsborne formula inside out, resulting in a point-blank masterpiece experience.
The flip from bleak fantasy action to Victorian horror was unexpected and exciting: enemies weren't just difficult but also terrifying, making the stakes feel even higher.
Also, the variety in play-style, stats, and armor from former titles was left behind. Bloodborne forced gamers to go forth with one method only: fast and aggressive. It gave you zero chance to bend the rules, you either stepped to the challenge or collapsed beneath it.
Unlike the later Soulsborne game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which subverted the formula into something near foreign, Bloodborne walked the perfect line of paying homage to its inspiration, whilst bringing the plenty original to the table.
It was a collaboration that excelled between Japan Studio and From Software, in what is peak work from both developers...where is that sequel though?
