Spider-Man PS4: 10 Ways It Owes Its Success To The PS2 Spider-Man 2 Game
1. A Stellar Voice Cast
Everyone has their Spider-Man. That one set of dulcet tones that quips like no other. At one point in the 2000s, when we were between cartoon series, that face and voice was Tobey Maguire. His portrayal of the web-slinger was so well known at that point in pop culture, that hearing anyone else's voice from out of that mask would have sunk the whole venture. Fortunately, Tobey stepped in (contractually obliged or not) to provide all of Spidey's lines.
In an era where big names in video game voice acting did not yet exist, getting minted Hollywood actors like him, Kirsten Dunst and Alfred Molina to reprise their characters (especially since they were the three most prominent voices in the game hands down) added real legitimacy to the title.
Insomniac's Spider-Man was fortunate enough to come along when this was a standard industry practice, but their pool of talent shines in the game, to the point it feels like no one else but Yuri Lowenthal could justifiably portray Spider-Man (sorry Tom).
It wasn't about casting big names, it was about casting the right people. Spider-Man 2 was fortunate enough to have three fall into their lap, while Insomniac had to search for theirs. Both titles were elevated for it.
