Spider-Man PS4: 10 Ways It Owes Its Success To The PS2 Spider-Man 2 Game
2. Challenges
'Be Greater' is not just a cute tagline, but an actual tenet which seeps through Spider-Man's design philosophy. It wouldn't be hard to build a Spider-Man game where all you do is swing between fights, learn a few attack patterns and beat some easy QTE bosses, but it would be so much cooler to flip, twist and dive with acrobatic grace we all envision Spidey having. That's why there were Trick Races, and why there are Taskmaster Challenges.
(There were also Screwball Challenges, but the less said there the better.)
An optional side objective in an area where there wasn't even gamerscore to flaunt your prowess, they nevertheless encouraged players to think before they swing, adapting all the techniques on hand to push their skill like never before. It's the same principle implemented in the Taskmaster Challenges, with each requiring players to develop their mobility, timing and strategy in ways they wouldn't often have to consider when playing story missions.
