Spider-Man PS4 Turf Wars Review: 3 Ups & 4 Downs

2. There's An Infuriating New Enemy Type

Spider-Man PS4 Turf Wars Shield
Insomniac

In The Heist, Insomniac introduced a new type of enemy called the 'minigun thug'. They added a new wrinkle to combat and they return in the following episode, but it never felt like they slotted effortlessly into the selection of enemy types already present in the title.

Unfortunately, the same issue rears its head in Turf Wars. As was previously mentioned, Hammerhead has acquired Sable tech left behind by Sablinova's old security forces, and has taken the liberty of outfitting his thugs with their weaponry. This gives way to a new enemy type, who boast a shield, a jetpack, and leave behind a gadget-nullifying trail of electrical goop in their wake.

In principle, this should be okay. Except in the latter stages of the DLC Hammerhead deploys several of these enemies in select encounters, and it wreaks havoc on Spider-Man's combat. There's no discernible pattern to their charges, and when more than one is present on the battlefield, they make manoeuvring a nigh-Herculean task, as the player is forced to dodge repeatedly until they inevitably fall into the red trail left behind from their attacks and leave themselves susceptible to a new barrage of whatever else is onscreen at that given moment.

Factor in the shield, the dozens of other combatants present and the fact they do immense damage upon connecting with Spidey, and combat encounters begin to feel less and less challenging, and more frustrating and chaotic instead.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
