That old codger Palpatine is nothing but space dust in Star Wars' current chronology, but really, what did cutting the head off the snake achieve? The Galactic Empire didn't simply decide to lay down its arms and join the Rebel scum on Endor to celebrate the demise of its leader; it collectively mourned his demise.

Why any level-headed individual would willingly devote their life to enforcing galaxy-wide fascist totalitarianism is a head-scratcher, but DICE isn't afraid to put forward its own answer. What if, from the inside looking out, the Rebel Alliance is nothing but a splinter terrorist group that wants nothing more than to upset the balance of 'peace' and order brought forth by the Empire's establishment?

For us, who know the whole story of Palpatine's rise and fall from beginning to end, the antagonistic force in Star Wars is obvious, but people like protagonist Iden Versio don't know the truth. For her, the Empire provides a sense of belonging and brings stability to the cosmos, and besides its ruthless approach to the Rebels, why would she ever be given cause to suspect otherwise?

We won't have all the answers to those burning questions until November, but just knowing Battlefront 2 has a campaign is, in itself, cause for celebration. That it adds to, rather than retreads, Star Wars' extensive mythos is just icing on the cake.
