Super Mario Odyssey: Ranking Every Boss Encounter From Worst To Best

4. Torkdrift

Madame Broodal Mario Odyssey
Nintendo

Torkdrift, the boss of the Wooded Kingdom’s Steam Gardens, is a bizarre mix between a UFO and a flower, which has been stealing the level’s plant-life. In fact, there’s something oddly beautiful about the creature, with its harsh and glowing metallic elements contrasting its delicate white petals.

The fight begins, hilariously, with Torkdrift warning Mario “DO NOT MESS WITH ME, BIPED," which sets the scenes for a fun and exhilarating fight. Mario must capture and make use of the extendable legs of the cute onion-like Uproot enemies to trounce Torkdrift, using them to break blocks and head-butt the boss’ forcefield generators, all whilst dodging its lasers attacks. After this, Torkdrift will flip upside down, giving Uproot-Mario access to its top side.

There’s something immensely enjoyable about attacking the boss’ central weak spot; it feels like it’s activating the part of your brain which finds pleasure from popping bubble wrap or watching those “oddly satisfying” ASMR-like videos on YouTube. Torkdrift might not be the most challenging boss of Odyssey, with most players beating it without difficulty, but it’s certainly one of the most aesthetically and mechanically pleasing.
