Super Mario Odyssey: Ranking Every Boss Encounter From Worst To Best
3. Cookatiel
Cookatiel looks physically similar to Wingo, the boss from Captain Toad’s Treasure Trackers, so it won't be winning any awards for design originality, but, thankfully, its fight is solid. As the boss of the food-themed Luncheon Kingdom, the Cookatiel fight has a culinary theme, taking place in a stew pot balanced precariously on top of the level’s immense volcano.
To activate the boss fight, Mario has to utilise the game’s most peculiar capture and become Meat-Mario. This surreal experience is the perfect introduction to the weird genius of the Cookatiel fight, in which Mario must capture a Lava Bubble, swim around the enormous stew dish and, eventually, swim up the pink liquid which the boss regurgitates from its enormous beak. Yes, you did read that correctly. This is surely one of the Mario series’ most delightfully disgusting boss fights ever.
Swimming up the increasingly complicated patterns of Cookatiel’s neon spew is a real thrill and takes a certain amount of skill to properly perform. Along with the colourful location and brilliantly gross mechanics, this slick boss fight is one of the game’s best.
