Considering how beloved it is now, the fact that Earthbound was received with what amounts to total apathy when it was first released in the US feels entirely illogical. But thanks to a disdain for its supposedly simplistic graphics (which are adorable) and a weird, ironic marketing campaign led to devastatingly low sales Stateside.

Luckily, nostalgia is a wonderful, helpful thing and the game is now rightly praised for its unique approach to the RPG genre - the formula for which it consciously messed with - and its glorious wit. It packs in barbs aimed at 90s culture along with truly emotional moments and dismissing it for its aesthetic proves why some people can't have nice things.

And the important thing is, it is as rewarding as it was difficult to master, which is precisely what you should be looking for in your games.
