Over the course of gaming history, certain games have become synonymous with certain genres. Ask somebody to name a shooter and the response will probably be Call of Duty, for platformers it will likely be one of the aforementioned trio of Crash, Mario and Sonic and any talk of sports will quickly pivot towards FIFA (or Madden on the other side of the pond). For survival horror, its undoubtedly Resident Evil.

Capcom’s franchise helped bring zombies back into the mainstream in the mid-90s and every release has built on the deep lore surrounding the Umbrella Corporation and Raccoon City. Though the first three games are most associated with Sony’s Playstation, Nintendo managed to facilitate the enhanced re-release of the first three games, with the original remade from the ground up, on the GameCube. Resident Evil 4 then had almost a year of exclusivity on the system, whilst prequel Resident Evil Zero didn’t hit a non-Nintendo console for fourteen years.

As a result of this, the history of the series and the history of Nintendo are heavily entwined. RE7 and the new HD remakes of II and III may not have hit the Switch yet, but the likes of Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine and/or Leon Kennedy are some of gaming’s most renowned faces and deserve their places in the Super Smash Bros pantheon.

The additions of characters like Bayonetta mean that Snake isn’t the only ‘realistic’ human anymore, so bring on the zombies!
