Team Fortress 2: 15 Stupidest Additions So Far
4. Unusual Effects
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkxbpy3ciXgPerhaps the most famous item in all of Team Fortress 2 is a hat called the Unusual Burning Flames Team Captain. This hat is very similar to the Team Captain, but with one very minor alteration: IT’S ON FIRE! Because the hat is on fire its value currently stands at around about $15,000 in real money. This goes for several other “unusual” hats, commanding thousands of dollars for a slightly stupider-looking version of a hat that can be obtained for free.
Unusuals can only be found in crates, so that means spending money. The chances of finding an unusual hat in a crate are 1 in 100. That means in order to theoretically guarantee yourself a hat with some ugly jazz happening on top of it, you would need to open up 100 crates. Even then the odds of you finding a "good" unusual hat are slim to none; odds are you’ll find a plunger with flies buzzing around it, and you’ll struggle to trade it to some other poor sap. At that point Team Fortress 2 stops being a class-based shooter and starts to resemble something you’d make in Microsoft Excel.
There is no easy way around this one, you either find one through sheer dumb luck, or you buy one for an extortionate price. Extortionate considering none of these flaming-smoking-plasma-spewing-whatever hats are actually real.
