Team Fortress 2: 15 Stupidest Additions So Far

13. The Polycount Pack Hat Debacle Of 2010

The great thing about TF2s free-to-play model is that the only things that require micro-transactions are purely cosmetic items such as hats, taunts etc. You can play through the game and acquire any of the weapons you want to use with a bit of creative trading or by just waiting for them to fall in your lap. Thankfully, there’s no pay-to-win aspect in the game.

Back in 2010, the Mann-conomy Update launched, and with it came five weapon sets with special hats; part of a competition held by Valve and Polycount.com. Some of these hats looked cool, but they were each a part of their own sets, and when that was complete you got a new ability. One was the sniper’s ability to survive any headshot, providing they have more than 1 HP.

The purely cosmetic hat now served a purpose, and awarded an advantage to anyone who had one, making that a part of the gameplay.

This was unfair; primarily because hats were a bit harder to come across without buying them or saving up to craft them, especially in 2010 before the ridiculous in-game economy had a chance to boom. Thankfully, since then the hats have lost their special powers.
