12. Scream Fortress 2014
Every year TF2 makes a big deal of its Halloween Update. They usually amount to a big boss fight on a spookier version of an existing map. They’re also usually absolutely fantastic, getting bigger, badder and more fun with a host of stupid spells and gimmicks to make everything about 50% more frantic (and TF2 was the epitome of “frantic” to begin with).
Then when the 2014 update rolled around things had slowed down and took a different approach. Bumper cars - awkwardly-controlled bumper cars. These were the basis of a series of pathetic mini-games that happened at the end of every match that, if exploited correctly, could last forever. It was meant to be a spooky carnival-themed level, but sadly that fell far short of expectations.
In addition, further emphasis was put on stupid Halloween hats that required money to obtain. Everyone got one for free upon playing the map during the event in a sly attempt to get people hooked so they would buy keys to open crates to obtain hats (that can only be worn at particular times of the year).
The map they used was also underwhelming. It was sd_doomsday; a map and game-mode that nobody liked which generally got ignored ever since its release, which brings us to…
