The A-Z Of Final Fantasy: Everything You Need To Know

U - Ultimate Weapons

Each character in each FF game has at least one Ultimate Weapon, their strongest and coolest and usually hardest find weapon in the game. These weapons are only ever available right near the end of the game and often require specific tasks to be completed. In FF10 for example, each weapon requires two seals to also be attained before the weapon's potential can be unleashed. Without these seals, the weapons are crap. This makes obtaining each one a royal pain in the ass but the reward is epic, as FF10 allows you to break the infamous 9999 damage limit and raises the bar to an astounding 99,9999. The easiest ultimate weapon to get in FF10 is Yuna's (no I can't remember what you have to do) and as an adept mage she is perfect for learning black magic. With a high enough level and the ability to duel cast, you can cast Ultima twice in one go dealing an uber-epic 1999998HP. SWEET! Even in the games restricted to 9999HP damage there are still some epic workarounds. Duel slash in FF7 is a great example. Ultimate weapons always offer the gamer a huge advantage over more easily acquired weapons.

V - Vincent Valentine

The coolest and most enigmatic character in any FF game, Vincent Valentine is only an optional party member in FF7. Still, his unique style, strong silent type mannerisms and murky past have made him a fan favourite. An ex member of the Turks, Vincent was in love with Lucrecia Crescent who was none other than Sephiroth's mother. After Sephiroth was born, Vincent was experimented on genetically and as a result stopped ageing. Cloud and co find Vincent sleeping in a coffin and after a brief conversation, Vincent joins the fight. Vincent also starred in the FF7 spin-off Dirge of Cerberus, a 3rd person action game that failed to wow audiences with its poor gameplay, design and narrative. Even so, Vincent remains one of the most popular FF characters to date.

W - Walkthroughs

I swear to god, no gaming franchise has so many walkthroughs posted on the internet. There are so many hugely in-depth walkthroughs for all the FF games. Walkthroughs can spoil games quite easily but they can also be a really great way to find out about hidden items, secret quests or how to breed Chocobos. Games like the FF series almost require social interaction to find all their hidden gems, as very few people could figure everything out for themselves....there is just too much! Of course, if you are like me and are either playing these games years after their original release (sorry FF7, I just couldn't see the beauty back then) or your friends aren't uber-geeks, then the only way to share information with the FF community is online. Walkthroughs and now wiki guides are an almost essential stop off when catching up with any FF title. Even if it is just to jog your memory. The best guides have been written by the FF super-fans, the guys who know every trick and have beaten every boss (even those crazy hard monster arena fiends in FF10) and have got every character in their party to their maximum level. Those guides are well worth a visit. I consider myself as a reasonably advanced FF10 player, having sunk over 1200 hours into it over 3 separate playthroughs and even I never got more than two of the ultimate weapons. I did win the first Blitzball game though, so, yeah....I rule.
