The Avengers Project Video Games: Everything You Need To Know

1. This Is Just The Beginning

So, you know how the MCU started off, right? And how we all lost our collective sh*t when Nick Fury entered Stark's mansion way back when in 2008? Well, it looks as though it's about to happen again. Yeah, I don't think the novelty's worn off either.

The press release specifically noted that the Avengers Project will be the first in a long line of Marvel titles, created in cooperation with Square Enix and any developer under their umbrella. It's clear that this will be a "multi-year, multi-game" affair, much in the same way EA have conducted their Star Wars business with Disney. However, there is a key difference going on here, in that the Avengers Project sounds like one, singular vision, as opposed to EA's all out assault on various branches of the Star Wars mythos.

What could this mean?

Well, it could be that each successive release, much like the MCU, builds towards an end-game at the conclusion of its first wave (or phase, if you prefer). An overarching plot certainly sounds enticing, but if we are truly building towards a Marvel Gaming Universe, well, I think it's safe to say I'm hooked. Like, no doubt it. The next year-long wait will be excruciating.

When Marvel's gaming VP remarked that Insomniac's Spidey title would be "a signal of things to come", I'm not so sure anyone pictured this. Regardless of whatever shape or form the Avengers Project may take, I think it's safe to say that our collective interests have been piqued.

Roll on 2018.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
