The Division: 10 Crucial Questions Ubisoft Must Answer
3. In Gameplay Terms, How Big Is The Map?
The canvas with which we're going to paint all our dynamic stories on is Ubi's all-new version of New York City, most likely compiled from a mix of The Crew's city-scanning tech, and Watch Dogs' architectural world-building. Aside from a street or two it's being touted as a 'one to one' representation of The Big Apple, but therein lies the rub - it's still just one city. The reason MMOs like World of Warcraft had forever excelled where Destiny fell down, was in world size and variety. WoW had an assortment of maps that took you from green pastures to underground caves and spectrally-lit dungeons, Destiny attempted to do the same, but quickly revealed its hand as essentially tying together a handful of multiplayer maps. For The Division, once you know which streets match up to which, that's pretty much all she wrote. It's only a problem insomuch as Ubi will surely release additional mission packs and DLC set within the same streets, but the long-term appeal of having one city with one art style continuing across such an expanse of land is something seeing it in action will justify one way or another.
