The Division Vs. Destiny: What's The Best Shooter Of 2016?
6. Loot & Weapons
Unlike Diablo III, which I always thought gave you new equipment too regularly, meaning you were forever hopping back and forth out of menus, both The Division and Destiny reward you with a sizeable upgrade every 20 or so minutes. It's enough to indulge in a mission or two before mixing up your loadout, and to really discern a winner, you need to look at what it 'means' to attain the rarest items out there. Destiny's base types are a fleeting but focussed bunch; a real 'rock, paper, scissors'-approach to equipping your character with assault rifles, hand cannons, sniper rifles and a few others. Stats go up or down based on a variety of factors, but at the heart of what it feels like when you pull the trigger, many are far too similar. Later on though, you'll get Legendary and Exotic weapons, and although their biggest selling point is primarily aesthetics as oppose to function, they do stand out from the crowd - especially if the core appeal of loot is obtaining be-speckled treasures your teammates won't have seen yet. This is much the same for armour too, which across various patches has gone from basic colour shaders through to ostentatious, angular designs - the rarest loot in Destiny feels rare, and that's where it has the edge. For The Division, it's clear Massive took Destiny's common complaints to heart, fleshing out your options into a staggering amount of base weapon types including rifles, shotguns, pistols, sawn-offs, semi and automatic rifles and more, which can also be modded in a variety of ways. However, due to the sheer pull of loot-grinding being to rank up and outfit yourself with pleasurably fancy gear, Destiny rewards your time with iconic equipment, as oppose to The Division, which hopes you'll find pleasure in something being labelled as legendary, yet not feeling or sounding as such. Winner: Destiny
