The Elder Scrolls VI: 8 Perfect Locations Bethesda Must Consider

7. The Past

One of the greatest aspects of the Elder Scrolls games is the deep backstory. The entire Stormcloak/Empire war originated from the Nord belief that one of their historical figures had ascended to godhood, and the Altmer refusal to admit such a possibility. The ancient Dwemer - long since extinct - decided to combine their use of magic with technology to such an extent that their machines are still active, centuries after them.

So what if the next Elder Scrolls game was set in the past?

Bethesda has broken some ground here already by setting The Elder Scrolls Online in the Second Era, with the first four games set in the Third Era and Skyrim set in the new Fourth Era. Setting the next game as a prequel opens it to a long list of possibilities.

The First Era hosts the Akavari invasion, beginning of the Psijic Order and the last known journey from Atmora - a frozen wasteland far to the north - to Tamriel. Given some slight wiggling of the numbers - each event happening some years apart from one another - it would make an epic game and allow for the player to shape events that would come in later (and earlier) games.

Maybe the best possibility yet, the Dwemer race could finally get a proper look-in.
