The Fall Of The JRPG: 5 Reasons Why RPGs Will Never Be The Same
3. Discovery
Vast open worlds, filled with hidden secrets, weapons, dungeons and all the other things that make us geeks and gamers get all hot and bothered. This was the key defining element for me when it came to playing the genre at hand. Nowadays, secrets hidden within the worlds are rare and the only undiscovered places in open world games hold small and insignificant side quests which are more likely to be catching chickens than slaying dragons; they're more useful for leveling up than giving you the Ultima Blade or a dragon to summon.
They took away the incentive to explore and discover the lore and a new world, replacing it with pointless tasks to burn some time. Some games have decided against the open world aspect completely, giving you a set trail to run and calling it a "vast universe". I've become quite disappointed with the modern attempt at creating a universe and only some games (with the help of esteemed writers) have managed to redeem themselves.
