The Game Awards 2018: 7 Ups & 6 Downs
2. Overcooked 2 Wins Best Family Game, Destroys First-Party Nintendo
One the night's most low-key satisfying awards wins was Overcooked 2 scooping the Best Family Game gong.
It's an especially amusing and surprising victory for the acclaimed, ludicrously addictive cooking sim considering that this category was dominated by first-party Nintendo exclusives - Mario Tennis Aces, Nintendo Labo and Super Mario Party.
Given that all three of those games were, honestly, a tad on the underwhelming side and really just good at best, it was neat to see the judges siding with a lower-profile but effortlessly superior game rather than just give the award to a more popular title.
If The Game Awards truly wants to be taken seriously as a celebration of the industry's artistry, more wins like this in the future will help cement it.
