The Game Awards 2018: 7 Ups & 6 Downs
5. Monster Hunter: World Wins Best RPG
For inexplicable reasons, Monster Hunter: World scooped the Best Role-Playing Game award, despite clearly being inferior to at least two other nominees, Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest XI.
Sure, Monster Hunter: World was fun to a point, but did it really deserve such effusive praise considering its bland lack of mission variety, middling combat and frustrating online matchmaking system?
That's not to ignore the fact that the game barely feels like it qualifies as an RPG. Category fraud to avoid ending up in the far more competitive "Best Action/Adventure Game" field? Absolutely.
Compare Monster Hunter: World to the boundary-breaking brilliance of Octopath in particular and this category really should've been no contest.
